YouTube is widely rolling out PiP for iPhone and iPad

YouTube announced last June that Picture-in-Picture (PiP) was coming to its iPhone and iPad apps. And wide availability is now just a few days away for Premium subscribers globally and free users in the United States.

YouTube is now ready to widely launch PiP support “over the next several days” for devices running iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or higher.

Once rolled out to your phone or tablet, there will be a “Picture-in-picture” toggle under Settings > General, while YouTube Premium will still offer background play where you just hear audio without any video.

YouTube PiP availability

In terms of availability, all paying YouTube Premium members on iPhone and iPad around the world “will have access to PiP for all content, (both music and non-music).”

  • To turn on the feature, go to Settings > General in your YouTube app and turn-on Picture-in-picture. If you don’t turn on PiP, you’ll still be able to use background play by default (based on your feedback from our experiments)!

In the United States, PiP is available to free users but only for “non-music content,” while advertising will continue to show.

iOS 16 release date: When does developer and public beta and official release come out?

The next major update for iPhone is iOS 16 and we’re close to seeing Apple reveal the features and changes that will arrive with the new software.

There are several launches when it comes to the iOS 16 release date including the developer beta, public beta, and the official public debut. Here’s what to expect…
iOS could include iPhone upgrades and changes for notifications, Messages, health features, an always-on lock screen, and more. Meanwhile, iPadOS could bring an all-new multitasking UI.

iOS 16 developer beta release date

As long as Apple doesn’t change its yearly tradition, the iOS16 developer beta should become available on June 6 following the WWDC 2022 keynote.

This build isn’t designed for just anyone to run and isn’t recommended (especially early versions) to install on a primary iPhone. Access to the iOS 16 developer beta requires a paid Developer account with Apple.

Public beta

Last year the iOS 15 public beta came just over three weeks after the first developer beta. That provides some time for the initial bugs and issues to be ironed out before a bigger group of people try out the new software.

With WWDC and the first iOS16 dev release expected on June 6, that means we could see the first iOS public beta in late June or if it’s pushed back further, early July.

iOS 16 release date: When does iOS 16 come out?

  1. iOS16 developer beta – expected June 6 release at WWDC
  2. iOS16 public beta – expected end of June or early July
  3. iOS16 public release – expected in September

If Apple ends up doing its iPhone event on September 13, we could see the official iOS16 release date land on September 19 this year.

A redesign to the MacBook Air 2022

A redesign is coming to the 2022 MacBook Air

Ever since Apple introduced the 24-inch iMac, rumors about a redesigned MacBook Air were certain. Then, when the company introduced a brand new MacBook Pro last November, it became clear that the Air would be the next one to be revamped.
While analysts Ross Young and Ming-Chi Kuo first believed Apple could add miniLED to this computer, they now say the company will remain with an LCD panel. Even though, a redesign is still expected with white bezels and colorful options.

MagSafe should be back, but ports limited

While Apple brought back all the important ports to the 2021 MacBook Pro, it does not seem as if the company will be that generous with the 2022 MacBook Air. Rumors so far say Apple will add two Thunderbolt ports for this machine, one on each side.

M2 chip debuts with the MacBook Air

Apple said it will no longer introduce another M1 chip. That statement opens the path for the second-generation Mac processors. Naturally, rumors talk about the M2 chip. This processor is rumored to be faster than the base M1 model, but not as powerful as the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra.
Rumors also talk about the possibility of an improved FaceTime HD camera with 1080p resolution – since the 2020 MacBook Air still features an HD webcam. The battery will likely be as good as the first M1 model, but it’s been a while since we last heard about this upcoming computer.
What are your thoughts on this Mac?

The foldable iPhone

But the iPhone won’t be the only foldable. The iPad may be the first of Apple’s devices to bend to the trend within the next two years.

Foldable iPad

Analysts say a foldable Apple device is coming, but the iPhone may not be the first to fold.
Pricing might be one of the biggest hurdles to bringing a product like this to market. A survey found that while people are interested in a foldable Apple device, they’re willing to spend a maximum $600 more for it (compared to the price of a non foldable phone). That’s less than the cost of the Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s ill-fated foldable phone, which was $2,000 at launch (it’s currently not available).

TouchID could make a comeback

For the past few months, we’ve been hearing plenty of rumors about a return of the screen-embedded fingerprint sensor in the iPhone. One rumor talked about the possibility of having this TouchID complement FaceID as another form of biometric authentication, while another suggested it would replace FaceID altogether to cut down on costs for a cheaper iPhone alternative.
We got more evidence supporting the comeback rumor, but now it’s looking like we may have to wait a bit longer to get TouchID back.

Google Maps vs Apple Maps

Google Maps vs Apple Maps: the key differences between both the navigation maps.

There’s no denying the fact that navigation tools like Google Map and Apple Maps have changed the way we search for places, directions, and explore local businesses. These two maps are the best location tracking apps that we have today. While both the apps serve a similar purpose, there are some major differences in their interface and features. But which of the two is better for you? Is Google maps better than Apple Maps? Which map app is most accurate? So, read on!

Google Maps vs Apple Maps – Key differences

Platform: Apple Maps was exclusively launched for Apple devices – iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch. This means if you don’t have an Apple device, you’re barred from using this navigation app. So, does Apple use Google Map? Luckily, Google Maps is built into all mobile devices, which means even Apple users can download it from the Apple store. In fact, Google Maps is quite popular on iOS devices, with Apple customers preferring it despite continuous improvements in Apple Maps.

Interface: The interface for iOS and Google Map is quite similar. With Apple Maps, you can use the search bar at the bottom of the screen for finding specific locations. By hitting the information button in the upper right, you can switch between Map, Transit, and Satellite views. Just below the information button, you can find the Look Around button to get a street-level view. While the text and icons are smaller in Apple Maps, Google Maps has larger icons and more brightly colored, which seems more eye-catching.

Like Apple Maps, Google Maps also feature a search box and three different view modes – Terrain, Satellite, and Default. You can also hit the ‘Street View’ button to look around as you were walking down the street, or click the 3D button to get a 3D view. When it comes to actual navigation screens, both are simple but with distinctive artistic styles. If you zoom in to Google Maps, an immediate sidebar pops out with information about nearby locations, while zooming into Apple Maps you will see more locations pop up on the street.

Public Transportation: Both Google Map and Apple Maps include public transportation information when you search for directions. All you need to do is pick a destination and hit the ‘public transportation’ button at the top of the screen. Using Google Map has more advantages as it has data on where users are, plus a mix of historical and crowdsourced data. Google can also give an estimate on how busy the public transport system is at any given time. Apple Maps doesn’t have that feature yet, but it may catch up soon. So, if you are planning to choose between Google Maps or Apple Maps, Google Maps wins in this particular feature.

Discovery:  Both Google Maps and Apple Maps let you see what’s around, help you find restaurants, gas stations, parking lots, and any other businesses. Google also provides information about parking spaces available, opening time of businesses, wait time at restaurants, photos, descriptions and user-generated star grades. Apple also provides such information but in less amounts. It also has partnerships with third party services like Yelp, Foursquare, and TripAdvisor.

Privacy: Both Google Maps and Apple Maps have their own privacy policies. As compared to Google Map, Apple has more privacy policies in place to protect and limit data collection. Talking further about Apple, they have developed a process called “fuzzing” that ensures anonymity. This process converts your precise location to a less-exact one after 24 hours. The app does not save the history of what you searched for or where you went. Google Maps, on the other hand, offers numerous customization and control options, such as Incognito mode, that keep your location and searches private.

iOS Maps vs Google Maps – The Bottom Line

Apple Maps has come a long way since its inception in 2012. It has overcome most of its initial struggles with the release of iOS 13 and iOS 14. However, it still needs to catch up to Google Map. In terms of use and interface, Google Map’ experience gives it an edge over the iOS interface. In our opinion, “privacy” is the only area where Apple has an advantage over Google Map. So, this is why Google map is better than Apple.

How to listen to audiobooks on an Apple Watch

👉 Apple has long offered a Books app for the iPhone and iPad, providing the ability to download and read electronic books and listen to audiobooks.

💫 With watchOS 6, the ability to listen to audiobooks is now available on an Apple Watch. Through your iPhone or iPad, you find and purchase audiobooks to download to your device. You can then add specific audiobooks to your watch to listen to anywhere you don’t want to lug around your phone.

First, let’s cover how to download and use audiobooks on your iPhone and then we’ll look at how to listen to them on your watch.

☝ Make sure you’re running watchOS 6 or higher. Open the Watch app on your iPhone. Tap General > Software Update. If you already have version 6.0 or higher, you’re good to go. If not, agree to the Terms and Conditions, and the latest update will download to the watch.

🔎 Search Audiobooks

Open the Books app on your iPhone and tap the Audiobooks icon to find new titles. Swipe down to check out the main sections, such as Just Announced, New & Trending, Top Charts, and Special Offers. At the top of the screen, tap the entry for Browse Sections. Here, you can explore audiobooks by special store sections as well as by genre.

If you’re looking for a specific audiobook, tap the Search icon. Then type the title, author, subject, or other criteria in the search field at the top. Tap the search button on the keyboard. The results are divided by ebooks and audiobooks. Tap the See All link for Audiobooks to browse the results.

👂 Listen on Apple Watch

If you want to listen to audiobooks on your Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the entry for app+. By default, the app automatically downloads any books that you’re currently listening to and any purchased books that you added to your Want to Read list. You can turn off either option if you wish to save space on your watch.

To manually add an app to your watch, tap the Add button. From the list of audiobooks, tap the one you want to add. Repeat this process to add additional titles to your watch. The app will include 5 hours from each audiobook, which you choose as long as you have enough space on your watch.

Your audiobooks download when your Apple Watch is charging, so the best time to download them may be at night when your watch is likely on the charger. As soon as you place your watch on the charger, you’ll see the audiobooks you added start to download from your phone.

❗ Control Audiobooks on Apple Watch

After your books have downloaded, open the Audiobooks app on your watch. Swipe through the audiobooks available on your watch. Tap the book you want to hear. From the audio player, you can pause, resume, skip ahead 15 seconds, go back 15 seconds, change the speed of the narration, pipe the sound to an external device, and skip to a different track.

You can also stream an Audiobook that you haven’t downloaded directly to the watch. Swipe down from the main screen until you see the options screen. Tap Library, find the book you wish to stream, then tap it to start playing.

✅ Control Playback on Apple Watch

If you want to play audiobooks on your iPhone, you can control them from your Apple Watch. Open the app on your watch and swipe up on the main screen to view options. Tap the entry for On iPhone and choose a book you want to play. You can then hear the book through your phone and control playback from your watch.

New iPhone tricks you’ll use all the time

Yes, your iPhone came with a user guide and there a ton of how-to videos on Apple’s site and YouTube. And we are ready to help you here!

Did you know that you can record your iPhone’s screen? It’s better than a screenshot that only gives you a still photo.

What about Apple Notes? The unassuming digital organizer is capable of a lot more than you realize. You can use it as a document scanner all the time.

Your iPhone contains countless features you probably aren’t using.

1️⃣ Respond to messages with a tap

A Tapback lets you respond or “react” to a message quickly with emojis — no need to hit send. Just double-tap or hold a message while in the Messages app. You can select a heart, thumbs up, thumbs down, !!, ? or Haha.

2️⃣ Adjust Calendar start and end times

When you add an event or edit an existing one in Calendar, time increments are by default set to five minutes. You can, however, change it between one and five-minute increments easily. To adjust the “Start” and “End” times, double-tap on either the date or time scroll wheel.

3️⃣ Organize your cards in Apple Wallet

With COVID-19, you really don’t want to use a touchpad at grocery stores. Using the Apple Wallet in your phone, you can store your credit, debit, prepaid, and store cards for easy touchless payment.

Open the wallet app and your cards stack on top of each other. The top default payment method is Apple Pay. To change it, tap your finger on the card you want to be your default payment method and drag it to the top of the stack. Easy!

4️⃣ Dim your iPhone with low light mode

If you’re using your phone in a dark room or the screen is merely too bright, you can turn to low light mode. This can dim your screen brightness more than the standard settings allow.

To enable it, tap Settings Accessibility Zoom Zoom Region > Full Screen Zoom. Return to the main Zoom menu and tap Zoom Filter > Low Light. Return to the main Zoom menu and toggle Zoom on.

Double-tap with three fingers to zoom out and restore the full screen. To access low light mode quickly, triple-tap the screen using three fingers or triple-click on the home button. Select Choose Filter to adjust or disable the light filter.

5️⃣ Stop the music

Looking for a bedtime timer that will stop your audio and lock your phone, forcing you to enter your passcode? You don’t need a special app for that.

Open the Music app and select your playlist and start a timer. Instead of choosing an alarm or alert sound, tap When Timer Ends. Scroll to the bottom and choose the Stop Playing option. Press start and done!

This timer is great for kids or yourself if you want to set a limit for playing addictive games or for bedtime. Having to unlock your phone is a good reminder that it is time to go to sleep.

6️⃣ Delete calculations with a swipe

There’s nothing more frustrating than messing up when you’re in the calculator app and you have to start over. Instead of hitting delete repeatedly, swipe back (left) as an undo.

apple pay

You should be using Apple Pay or Google Pay

💳 Paying with a smartphone is actually more secure and more efficient than using a credit card.

👉 When Apple PAY was first announced back in 2014, it seemed like a revolutionary idea that would take a while to catch on. Six years later, a little under half the iPhone users out there are paying with their phone, with Google and Samsung Pay growing on Android as well. Apple Pay currently accounts for 10 percent of all global card transactions.
If you aren’t using Apple and Google Pay at the grocery store, it’s time to start—it’s better than a credit card in pretty much every way.

❗ It’s much faster than chip-based credit cards

To start, credit cards have gotten slow, thanks to the new chip-based readers. This new (old) tech is much slower than the old swipe-to-pay credit cards of yore, making plastic a bit more of a hassle.
👆 With Apple and Google Pay, you just pull out your phone, unlock the home screen, and hover it over the reader—it’ll “swipe” your digital credit card instantaneously, faster than any chip-based card. You don’t even have to open the app—just unlock your phone and tap. If you have a smartwatch, you might be able to tap it to the reader without even touching your phone.

🔺You still get your credit card points

❓ Whenever I evangelize Apple and Google Pay to friends, I get the same question: “But what about my credit card points?” This is a misunderstanding of how these services work. You aren’t paying Apple, who then pays the retailer. When you tap your phone to pay, it works exactly as if you’d scanned your credit card—the charge shows up on your Visa bill and you get all the points you’re entitled to.

🔐 It’s secure

Finally, as with all things digital, some folks are hesitant to switch to a service they aren’t familiar with—especially since digital security hasn’t had the most confidence-inducing decade.

❕ But credit cards haven’t exactly been bastions of security either—as anyone who’s had their card stolen will tell you. In some ways, Apple and Google Pay are actually more secure than their plastic counterparts. Both services use tokenization, creating a unique code whenever you make a purchase—the merchant never sees your credit card number, and even if a thief were to somehow steal that code, they wouldn’t be able to use it to make more purchases. This is the same enhanced security your credit card’s chip uses.

For some reason, though, our credit card chips don’t require PIN numbers like they do overseas, so if anyone steals your card, they can make purchases for you. Apple and Google Pay, on the other hand, are locked behind the fingerprint sensor or face recognition on your device, adding an extra layer of security that credit cards don’t have. So even if someone were to steal your phone, they’d have a hard time using it for a Best Buy shopping spree. Oh, and if you lose your phone, you can turn your digital wallet off remotely with Find My iPhone and Google’s Find My Device.
